Recreation
The
city of Eugene is situated in the picturesque Willamette Valley
in mid-western Oregon Tall, green fir trees abound, and several
mountains (Snow capped during the winter months) are visible
from the valley floor.
The days spent at the Heavy Equipment Operators School can be
long and arduous. But, when the work is done it’s time
to have some fun! There is no better place to enjoy your leisure
hours than the myriad of recreational opportunities within an
easy drive of Eugene. From snow skiing to deep sea fishing,
the options are almost too numerous to mention.
Nothing beats white water rafting or kayaking down the magnificent
McKenzie River for sheer excitement.
Easy-to-get fishing licenses allow you to enjoy fly fishing
for Rainbow Trout; boat or shore fishing in one of the many
nearby lakes for Bass and Brown Trout, or deep sea fishing in
the Pacific Ocean for Salmon, Sea Bass, Halibut or Ling Cod.
Hunting Licenses are a little more difficult to obtain, but
if you are one of the lucky ones there are seasons for deer,
elk, black bear and cougar to test your skills with a rifle
or a bow and arrow.
The Pacific Coast area offers a chance to catch a delicious
Dungeness Crab, dig for hearty clams, watch magnificent whales
in their annual migration or view the massive Sea Lions in their
caves just north of Florence. Oregon has the highest coastal
sand dunes in the world, and beachcombing is a favorite pastime
of locals and tourists alike. Odd shaped pieces of driftwood
can be found as can star fish and other interesting marine life
in the tide pools. Not to overlook the fact that the Oregon
Coast Aquarium - former home of Keiko the killer whale, and
star of the motion picture “Free Willy”- is but
a few short miles farther up the coast.
Drive east from Eugene to take in snow skiing and snow boarding
at any one of several winter mountain resorts. A few more miles
to the east gives one a chance to explore many of the ancient
ghost towns and abandoned stagecoach stops prevalent in the
high desert area of eastern Oregon.
Camping, hiking and swimming are available in any one of the
many public parks. There is even a hot springs for those in
need of a therapeutic break.
Old fashioned paddlewheel river boat cruises are available,
or maybe you’d like to have dinner on a train while watching
a comedy show or a murder mystery play conducted by the train’s
restaurant employees.
Golf can be played almost anywhere near Eugene from small par
3 courses to PGA level country clubs which test even the best
players.
Bicycling may be your thing, and if it is you’ll be glad
to know that Eugene has more bike lanes in town than New York
City has Taxicabs.
Unique shops are aplenty as are “Saturday Market”
affairs where farmers and artisans bring their wares to town
on weekends to tempt even the most discriminating of shoppers.
Nothing can match the thrill of the world class track meets
held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field, site
of several Olympic Trial events. The resurgent Oregon football
and basketball teams are giving avid fans almost more than they
can handle.
Eugene has a minor league baseball team, and what better way
for a family to spend Saturday or Sunday afternoon than to be
watching baseball; wolfing down hot dogs and soda and yelling
at the umpires.
Yes, the fact is that Eugene, Oregon is a wonderful place to
be. Whether you live here or are just passing through you can’t
help but become enchanted by the beautiful scenery, the smorgasbord
of activities and the friendly folks.
